How do I know if I have damage to my roof.

Home owners need to look for curling, discolored or missing shingles; damaged, discolored or rotting wood on the fascia or under the eaves. When buying a home it is always a good idea to ask for an Inspection and Roof certification.

Some signs of possible  hail damage that might be noticeable from the ground are excessive granules in the gutters or on the ground after a storm, actual damage shows as a mark or bruising of the shingle. This is easier to see on lighter colored shingles and easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for.

I recommend that home owners never get on their roofs. If you don’t know what you are doing you can cause more damage to your roof or injury to yourself.

It is always best to call a qualified roofer to assess the damage. A good way to find a qualified roofer is to call a local supply company or building department. While they can’t guarantee everything will go perfectly they do know who has been around and will most likely continue to be around. During large hail storms an area will see “Storm Chasers” these are roofing contractors who pay to use the licenses and phone number of local contractors so it can be confusing if you are using a local company or not. Check out the license plate on their vehicle, if it is an out-of-state plate chances are good they are a “storm chaser”. I have dealt with many “Storm Chasers” over the years and as with any contractor there are good ones and bad ones. It pays to do a little research when dealing with them; once they are gone you may not be able to get help if there is a problem.

In 2010 a freak hailstorm in Arizona had many roofers headed that way looking for a profitable way to spend the winter. Storm Chasers are very adept at appearing to be local, so it is important to do some research on the company you are working with and asking questions of them. Talking to them about their favorite restaurants or local activities should give you an idea if they just hit town or have been around awhile.
